History This award-winning wheated bourbon is steeped in tradition and excellence. The Wellers' distilling roots trace back to the 1740s. Settling in Kentucky in the late 18th century, the family established a distillery in Nelson County. After serving in the Mexican-American war, William Larue Weller returned to Kentucky to join the family business. He revolutionized the industry by introducing wheat as a secondary grain in 1849. His bourbon soon gained immense popularity, leading him to certify his products with a green thumbprint. The legacy continued with Pappy Van Winkle, who joined W.L. Weller & Sons in 1893 and later co-founded the Stitzel-Weller Distillery. Buffalo Trace acquired the brand in 1999, preserving the nearly identical recipe that made it legendary.
