The 10 Year variant is an elite bourbon, perfect for any connoisseur. Named after the legendary Julian P. Van Winkle, Sr., affectionately known as "Pappy," this bourbon is produced at the award-winning Buffalo Trace Distillery. Crafted from Mash Bill #2, it shares its lineage with other iconic blends like Blanton's and Elmer T. Lee. This sour mash blend of corn, malted barley, and extra rye delivers a rich and complex profile with strong vanilla and toasted wood aromas. On the palate, experience a buttery mouthfeel with rich caramel and roasted nuts. The finish is long, spicy, and buttery, making it a standout in the world of bourbon.
The 12 Year variant, known as Van Winkle Special Reserve, achieves the perfect balance of age and proof. Aged for 12 years and bottled at medium proof, this bourbon offers a luxurious experience. Also crafted from Mash Bill #2, it features a sour mash of corn, malted barley, and extra rye. This highly sought-after whiskey is rich and smooth with vibrant toffee notes, medium-bodied with caramel hints, layered with nuts, and a touch of brown spices, finishing with a lengthy, satisfying aftertaste.
History
These bourbons are legendary in the bourbon community, often referred to as "unicorns." They honor the legacy of Julian P. Van Winkle, Sr., known as "Pappy." Starting his career in 1893, Pappy became the President of Stitzel-Weller Distillery, earning a stellar reputation for quality bourbon. Though the business was sold in 1972, Julian Jr. formed "J.P. Van Winkle and Son" to keep the family legacy alive. His son, Julian III, took over in 1981, and despite low demand for premium bourbon, he persevered by focusing on quality. In 1999, Buffalo Trace acquired the W.L. Weller label, and since 2002, has produced the Van Winkle bourbons using Pappy's exact recipe, ensuring strict quality standards for future enjoyment.
