Crafted by the esteemed Buffalo Trace Distillery, this exceptional bourbon is part of the illustrious "Antique Collection Series", highlighting the legacy of Master Distiller and pioneering bartender, Thomas H. Handy. Revered for his cocktail-making prowess, this rare bourbon exudes an herbaceous richness with intertwined vegetal notes, dark honey undertones, and subtle black pepper hints. The finish is elegantly sweet, with traces of cherry preserves and dried fruit.
Tracing its roots back to 1782, this bold spirit has graced bars and saloons, known then as coffeehouses, for centuries. The famed Sazerac Coffee House, established in 1850 in New Orleans, became a popular gathering spot, renowned for its fine spirits. By 1895, Vincent Miret, a distinguished bartender and part-owner, earned acclaim as the city's premier cocktail mixer. Initially a blend of brandy, sugar, and bitters, the recipe evolved in 1885 to feature Rye Whisky, reflecting the ingenuity of Thomas H. Handy.
In 1919, just before Prohibition, Thomas H. Handy founded the Sazerac Company. The company adapted, operating as a restaurant and deli until 1933 when it resumed its cocktail-making legacy. The Sazerac Bar, along with a manufacturing and bottling facility, flourished, and the renowned recipe was exclusively sold at the bar until 1949. Today, the Sazerac Bar continues to thrive at the Roosevelt Hotel. The company's expansion in the 1950s saw the launch of new spirits like vodkas and the acquisition of several distilleries, culminating in the 1999 launch of Buffalo Trace.
This coveted spirit, distilled in the spring of 2010, matured for six years and five months, selected from just 61 barrels stored on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors of Warehouses I, K, and M. As a cask-strength rye-based release from Buffalo Trace's annual Antique Collection series, it stands out as one of five elite expressions, embodying the "sazerac rye allocated" heritage.
